In her new exhibition Banana Justice at Galerie Bernd Kugler, Elke Silvia Krystufek explores the erosion of justice and the mechanisms of social power. The title refers to the polemical term “banana justice”—a phrase describing a legal system that has lost its integrity and become an instrument of political or economic interests.

Krystufek, whose work since the early 1990s has been marked by radical self-staging and political sharpness, transforms this theme into a visual and performative field of tension. Between juridical pathos and pop-cultural irony unfolds a cosmos of painting, text, object, and photography, in which bananas—symbols of exoticist projections, sexual innuendo, and economic dependency—become emblems of systemic imbalance.

The exhibition interrogates the relationship between power, the body, and institutions, a triad that has always been central to Krystufek’s practice.
