Bernd Kugler is pleased to present 5 is a different 1, the seventh solo exhibition of German-Swiss artist René Luckhardt at the gallery. A new series of paintings will be on display centering around the eponymous painting sculpture 5 is a different 1.

Luckhardt's paintings are the artistic approach to a photograph of underground icon Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995). The Californian actress, visual artist, poet and occultist was and is the enigmatic protagonist of a counterculture whose influence can still be felt today. Luckhardt's paintings dissect the black-and-white photograph of hers into innumerable variants. Inconspicuous details oft he photograph are transformed into painterly-graphic compositions in their own right and, in a surprising twist, rearranged in a sculptural and discursive way. The title 5 is a different 1 summarizes such an approach in the form of a slogan.

The work is inspired by Andy Warhol's pop position Marilyn of a modern icon. From an almost void and ante-chamber of imagery, it is contrasted with this model of an angel of a very different kind. As a consequence it carries neither the name Marjorie, nor Cameron - what enters the stage is at best: Marjolyn.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with a short essay by Andreas L. Hofbauer in a limited edition of 150 copies. Artist and author will be present at the opening.

Die Galerie Bernd Kugler freut sich, mit 5 is a different 1 die siebente Einzelausstellung des deutsch-schweizerischen Künstlers René Luckhardt in ihren Räumen präsentieren zu können. Gezeigt wird eine Werkreihe neuer Malerei, in deren Mittelpunkt die titelgebende Gemälde-Skulptur 5 is a different 1 steht.

Luckhardts Malerei setzt sich mit einer Fotografie der Underground-Ikone Marjorie Cameron (1922-1995) künstlerisch auseinander. Die kalifornische Filmschauspielerin, bildende Künstlerin, Dichterin und Okkultistin war und ist enigmatische Protagonistin einer Gegenkultur, deren Einfluss noch heute spürbar ist. Luckhardts Malerei zerlegt ein Schwarz-Weiß-Foto von ihr in unzählige Varianten, würdigt unscheinbare Ausschnitte einer eigenständigen malerisch-grafischen Darstellung und setzt diese in überraschender Weise skulptural und diskursiv neu zusammen. Der Titel 5 is a different 1 fasst eine solche Vorgehensweise in Form eines Slogans zusammen.

Andy Warhols Pop-Position Marilyn einer modernen Ikone steht hier Pate. Aus einem Fast-Nichts und einem Vor-Raum der Bildlichkeit heraus, wird dieser aber ein Modell eines ganz anderen Engels gegenübergestellt. Dieser trägt folgerichtig weder den Namen Marjorie, ist auch keine Cameron – was die Bühne betritt ist bestenfalls: Marjolyn.

Begleitend zur Ausstellung erscheint ein Katalog mit einem Essay von Andreas L. Hofbauer in einer auf 150 Stück limitierten Auflage. Künstler und Autor sind zur Eröffnung anwesend.
